Stephanie Hargens is the Superintendent at Michigan Online School. Mrs. Hargens is an education veteran with 23 years of experience in teaching and administration in multiple settings-traditional public, online, private, charter, and she even spent time working in schools in the United Kingdom. She is a staunch advocate for choice in education. Mrs. Hargens graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and earned her Master’s Degree from California State University in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. In her spare time Mrs. Hargens loves to spend time with her husband and three daughters, travel, and bake cupcakes.
Amy Stirling is the Principal of Michigan Online School. She is in her third year at MOS, and her 14th year in education. She received her undergraduate degree from Hillsdale College in Marketing Management with a minor in Biology (where she also played college volleyball), and her secondary teaching credential in biology and integrated science from California State University, Northridge. She earned her master’s degree in educational leadership from Grand Valley State University in 2018. In her spare time Amy enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 children, reading, crafting, cooking, and playing volleyball.
Terasa Burt is the Elementary Principal for Michigan Online School. She joined the team in 2020 as a science teacher, and has also served as Operations Manager. She started her career in education as an elementary teacher in 2006, and transitioned to online education 2013 where she found a true passion for educating students virtually. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Central Michigan University with a major in General Science and a minor in History. She earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Grand Valley State University. Terasa enjoys reading, baking, gardening, and adventuring with her husband and 2 sons.
James Van Nada
Jim Van Nada is the Student Services Coordinator at Michigan Online School. He started his career in education working for Grand Valley State University managing student housing, and held several roles in higher education and vocational training before joining the MOS team as a Success Coach in 2020. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and French Language & Literature from Oakland University. He earned his Master’s Degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Bowling Green State University. Jim spends his spare time planning outdoor adventures with his spouse, attempting to keep up with his dog, and learning new recipes!
Katie Shirk is the Manager of Students with Disabilities at Michigan Online School. She is a native Michigander. This is Katie’s 27th year in education. Katie has consulted throughout the state while working within the public school system. She has held positions as resource teacher, teacher consultant, assistant principal, special education supervisor and director. Katie holds an Educational Leadership, Special Education Administration degree from Grand Valley State University and a master’s in Special Education, endorsed in Specific Learning Disabilities from the University of Michigan. Her undergraduate degree is in general and special education with an endorsement in Emotional Impairments. Katie has a strong student-centered focus and truly believes all students can and want to learn. In her spare time, she loves spending time with her two children, her parents and being active outdoors!
